This instrument was made by sampling the 12th fret harmonics of a 1966 Gibson J-45.
This guitar belongs to a family member who kindly offered it to me for sampling. I simply couldn’t pass up on the opportunity of capturing this antique guitars’ beautiful qualities and immortalising it in a digital format that will last forever.
A cool backstory I found out about the instrument was that it once belonged to the rock band The Levellers before it was purchased in Soho, London by its current owner.
Prior to sampling this instrument, I had no experience with any vintage Gibsons so having the opportunity to play and record this for the day was a very special for me. The guitars tone is so balanced and perfectly resonant. It really made me understand why these are so desirable today. It was quite hard for me to process how good it sounded when bearing in mind that’s its almost 55 years old.
This EXS version beautifully captures all of the wonderful characteristics of this guitar. A perfect adition to your next composition. Please take a listen to the demo tracks below.
I sampled it using a stereo matched pair of Rode M5 condenser mics that ran into the Xenyx pre-amps of my Behringer 1002B mixer. All samples were noised reduced using RX7 Advanced. I recorded 3 velocity layers and 3 Round Robins of each note for a total of 54 samples (see exact size below). All samples were recorded at 48kHz 24bit.
